Three days after drug smuggler Samsul Haque Talukdar alias Pakhi Miyan escaped from custody while undergoing treatment at the Guwahati Medical College Hospital, the Government on Wednesday placed under suspension Dr Punyadhar Deuri, registrar of the surgery department of the hospital. A departmental inquiry report had revealed that Deuri had reportedly shown “undue personal interest” in getting Talukdar admitted to the hospital.Talukdar was arrested in Kolkata in April 2007 in connection with the murder of a revenue intelligence official in Guwahati in 2006. Later, he was shifted to Assam. Initially lodged in Nagaon Central Jail, he was recently shifted to the Guwahati Central Jail from where he was admitted to the GMC Hospital for treatment on December 19. On Monday morning, he escaped from police custody by drugging two constables guarding him. ENS
