The West Bengal Police today recovered Rs 5.8 lakh from the house of Gunjan Ghosh, one of the key members of the gang arrested in connection with the abduction of Roma Jhawar, a college student of Salt Lake in Kolkata.
This gives credence to the theory that ransom was paid to the abductors by Roma’s family. Roma was abducted on February 4 near her home at CB block in Salt Lake.
In another development, the CID today arrested the driver of the Jhawars, Sukumar Mondal, from his residence in Howrah district for his involvement in the abduction. Sukumar was driving the car from which Roma was abducted at gunpoint.
CID officials claimed they had evidence that Mondal was involved. ‘‘He provided all the information to the abductors. Interrogation revealed that the men did not pay him his share of money,’’ said DIG Rajiv Kumar, CID (Operations).
However, police said they were yet to locate Arvind, the kingpin of the gang.
