Rahul Dravid rose to the occasion at a packed house at the Oval. His immaculate defense and correct technique were on display. India made a fitting reply amidst stoppages for rain and badlight.

Despite Dravid’s shining form, it was the reigning god of Indian cricket who grabbed the attention of the thousands who thronged the Oval. Playing in his 100th Test, the little master was treated to rapturous applause. Even some of the England players were overcome by the occasion.

Tendulkar’s composure and balance at the crease reached another plane today. The extra weight of expectation prompted him to concentrate with greater intensity. Nasser Hussain was intent on restricting the strokeplay of the free-scoring Indians during the first half of the day. The bowlers were encouraged to bowl to a defensive field.

Tendulkar’s fifty may have disappointed the millions who were looking forward to a century on the momentous occasion of his 100th Test. But his innings deserves the praise that is often associated with his more celebrated knocks. Tendulkar at no stage looked overawed by the emotion of the moment. Despite a few nervous moments at the start of his innings, Tendulkar was a picture of confidence.

Dravid’s glorious summer goes from strength to strength. In fact, it was he who has spearheaded India’s positive reply. Indian skipper Saurav Ganguly looked dangerous at times. Sadly for India, his dismissal came against the run of play.
