DERA BASSI, April 21: A 23-year-old newly married woman, Balwinder Kaur of Fatehpur Dehra village, under Dera Bassi block, was allegedly set on fire by her parents-in-law for not bringing enough dowry.

Balwinder has been recuperating at the PGI where she was admitted last week with 60 per cent burns. Doctors attending on her said that she was under medical observation and “it is very difficult to comment on chances of her survival.”

Balwinder, daughter of Jit Ram, a resident of Sanaur village near Patiala, was married to Gurdev Singh in December last year. Soon after the marriage, she was harassed and beaten up by her husband and in-laws over dowry repeatedly, her father alleged in a statement before the police.

Balwinder, in a statement before the duty magistrate, confessed that she was set afire by her husband, Gurdev Singh, accompanied by his father, Bag Singh, mother Shanti Devi and two brothers Birsa Singh and Shamsher Singh after they poured kerosene on her while she was cooking food on April 16.

A case has been registered at the Dera Bassi police station and investigations are on.
