Former Congress MP and ambassador to Laos Gauri Shanker Rajhans faces charges of harassing his daughter-in-law for dowry, torturing her and asking her to sign a statement denying her allegations.

The FIR filed by the girl’s father, BBC journalist Manikant Thakur, alleges physical and mental torture ever since the marriage in April. Rajhans and his brother-in-law P.K. Mishra were sent to judicial custody today.

Aparna returned home to her father in July when the torture became unbearable. Thakur filed the FIR with the Gandhi Maidan police after Rajhans allegedly tried to take Aparna away and threatened to use his ‘‘political connections’’ against him on Monday.

Aparna’s husband Punit is a journalist in Delhi. The FIR says the Rajhans demanded Rs 25 lakh, a flat and a car. Thakur said he had been asked to hand over the few lakhs he spent for the marriage in cash but did not see through the intentions. ‘‘She called me (after two months) and said she was being pushed to suicide. I then asked them to send her here,’’ he said.

Rajhans reached Patna on Monday and asked Thakur and Aparna to meet him at a hotel. There, he threatened Thakur and asked Aparna to sign a statement saying she was never tortured nor did the family demand dowry. When she resisted, the Rajhans tried to forcibly take her away.

Thakur then called the police. But the accused fled before they arrived. Rajhans and Mishra were later arrested from a Patna apartment.
