
The grand old beauties sputtered to life and participated with much gusto in Vintage Car Rally
Age may have caught up with them but the spirits have not flagged.
Led by 1911-model fire tender Merry Weather, as many as 70 old beauties dating back to 1905 left the onlookers astonished as they took road one after another.
And even when their honking was not music to the ears, their beauty took every one by surprise.
Used to the modern-day I-10, Marutis, Zens, Unos, Versa and Tata Safaris, Lucknowites just grabbed the opportunity of some classy vintage viewing on Sunday as part of the Club HP Vintage Car Utsav-2008.
As soon the colourful rally was flagged off by Prashant Trivedi, Commissioner Lucknow Division, the tarmac was lined with Austins, Summer Sides, Fords, Morrises, Plymouths, Chevrolets, Mercedes Benz in their antiquated best.
To lend a touch of elegance were the owners attired in traditional apparel.
As the knight in shining armour 8211; a 1937 Baby Austin 8211; charmed one and all, 8216;1930 Ford8217; also stood out in the milieu.
For onlookers, young and old alike it was an experience. While old timers were seen getting nostalgic, Gen-Next was forced to take note of the old. With cheers coming from corners, proud owners of these vehicles behaved as kings of the road.
Some boasted of the rarity of the model, others could be seen talking of the historical time to which the vehicles belonged.
Though most of the engines completed the race without hiccups, some vintage vehicles did give their owners a few jerks.
Moving on a new and extended route, rally attracted huge crowds all through Genesis Club, Kursi Road where the rally culminated.
Ekka-tonga race, which followed brought back the old memories when they used to rule the Lucknow roads.
