Double whammy for Shukrit, Aandrita

Shukrit Guha and Aandrita Deb ended up with a double crown in their respective Under-14 categories at the AITA Talent Series 2008, which was being played at the South Club. Guha coasted to a comfortable win against Udhav Gupta, prevailing 6-0, 6-1. Later, he teamed up with Harsh Gurnani to take the doubles crown 2-4, 4-2 (10-4), beating the duo of Innocent Lalrindika and Md Kamran Ali.

Aadrita won the girls singles title against Adrita Banerjee 6-2, 6-4. Later, Aandrita and Adrita Banerjee teamed up to beat the pair of Shiuli Dasgupta and Priyam Periwal 4-1, 4-2.

The boys’ singles Under-12 crown went to Yuvraj Singh. He beat Rishabh Shah 6-1, 6-0. In the girls’ Singles Under-12 event, unseeded Priyam defeated top seed Mehak Sekhani 3-6, 6-0, 6-3. The boys’ singles Under-10 title was won by Debjit Chakraborty. He defeated Vatsal Bajpai 8-5. The winner of the girls’ singles Under-10 section was Aishwarya Kundu, who beat Adrija Biswas 8-0. The special prize for the Most Promising Player went to Jattin Singh Saini.

Meanwhile, another Talent Series is coming up in the city, organised by Krishanu Dey and it will be played at the CC&FC. The categories will include boys’ singles Under-14, girls’ singles Under-14, boys’ singles Under-18 and girl’s singles Under-18. Doubles for all the events will also take place.

In another event that is being played at the CC&FC, Saturday Club made it to the last four stage of the ongoing Inter Club Floodlit Tennis Tournament 2008. The other teams who made it to the semi-finals are CCFC, Tollygunge Club and Bengal Rowing Club.

It was a do-or-die match for Calcutta Punjab Club against the already qualified and group toppers Tollygunge Club. Calcutta Punjab Club had to defeat Tolly Club to enter the semis and show Saturday Club the door. But Tolly Club prevailed, whipping Calcutta Punjab Club by 4-1.
