Punjab will soon become the first state in the country to have inter-city double-decker bus service, for which the Punjab Transport Policy and State Motor Vehicle Rules are being amended.

These AC and non-AC buses with 80 reclining seats will ply between Chandigarh and different district headquarters.

Principal Secretary (Transport) DS Jaspal said, “We are working out technical modalities and details will be soon sent to the cabinet for approval. The fares will be nominal.”

Talking to The Indian Express, Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal said, “These buses are ergonomically suited, as more people can be accommodated, avoiding overloading. Besides, there will be less congestion on roads and a poor man can travel in comfort. By the next three years, all buses in the state will be made air-conditioned.”

At present, the Punjab Roadways and Pepsu Transport have 2,700 ordinary buses. Recently, 14 ordinary buses were launched and an order for 50 AC buses has been placed by the government. By March, there will be 100 AC buses in the state, said sources.

Also, a new category within the ordinary AC is on cards.
