Harbhajan Singh may consider Matthew Hayden one of the most disliked cricketers around, but Adam Gilchrist disagrees, calling his one-day opening partner “one of the most respected people in our team.”
Hayden had added fuel to an already explosive tour when he described Harbhajan as an “obnoxious little weed” and challenged young Indian paceman Ishant Sharma to a boxing bout in an interview to Brisbane Radio.
The Indian off-spinner replied by saying Hayden was one of the most disliked players on the international cricket circuit.
“You only need to speak to international cricketers… to know what opinion they hold Hayden in,” Harbhajan had said.
Gilchrist, however, sprung to the defence of his team mate. “I’ve not ever cared to think what other teams think of Matthew Hayden. He’s one of the most respected people in our team. That’s all that interests me.”
Harbhajan had also alleged that Australian skipper Ricky Ponting abused him during the one-dayer in Adelaide, but Gilchrist dismissed the claims.
He did admit that the controversies during his farewell international season were taking a toll and it was important for the hosts to concentrate on playing good cricket.
“There’s been a lot on, a lot of issues, I haven’t played in too many summers where there’s been as many number of issues you could bring to mind.”
‘My gloves are fine’
Melbourne: Adam Gilchrist has denied an Indian manufacturer’s claim that his gloves could not have been different from the “faulty” ones worn by MS Dhoni. Manufacturers from Meerut had claimed that Gilchrist wears the same product from their wares under a different brand and if Dhoni’s gloves were “illegal” why not the Aussie ’keeper’s. “I’ve had my gloves checked. I do know that the guy who makes those (Dhoni’s) gloves makes my gloves as well and I’ve had match referees check my gloves and they’re fine.”
