LUCKNOW, MARCH 3: For once, the culture police of Kanpur were at the receiving end. Third-year BA students of S N Girls Degree College heckled the principal and beat up their college union president who supported the management decision to impose a salwar-kurta dress code on the campus.

The girls, all wearing jeans in violation of the dress code, allegedly twisted the arms of the principal and attacked the union leader when she came to rescue her. They were protesting after they were denied entry to a college function for violating the dress code.

The college has been closed for two days and the principal MadhulekhaVidyarthi has decided to expel two girls of the group and urged the local administration to take action against the girls. "We will take necessary action," Circle Officer Harish Kumar said.

On February 14, activists of the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) blackened faces of girls and boys who were spotted by them together and damaged restaurants where they were found because of the ABVP’s opposition to Valentine’s Day.

The BJP students’ outfit has also imposed a dress code in several schools and colleges, banning skirts and jeans. They have also asked the local administration to remove PCOs and restaurants in the vicinity of colleges to check what they called "growing influence of Western culture."

Madhulekha, however, claimed that the decision banning skirts andjeans was not taken under pressure from any organisation but was acollective decision of the management. "We will not allow jeans or skirtsin the college premises and will make sure that everyone respects the decision," she told The Indian Express adding that the two girls, Heena and Chetna, who allegedly roughed up the union president would be expelled.
