MUMBAI, May 9: Ravindra Dongre caused a major upset in the All India Open chess tournament today by defeating second seed Chandrashekhar Gokhale in the third round.

Eleven players lead the table at the end of the third round.

Dongre, playing white, made inaccurate moves in the Vienna game. Chandraskekhar overlooked a small combination on the 15th move which cost him a central pawn. Thereafter, Dongre tightened his grip by forcing his opponent to give up another pawn on the kingside by taking advantage of a badly placed bishop.

Gokhale prolonged the inevitable till the 49th move and then gave up after Dongre threatened to queen central passed pawn.

Top seed IM G B Prakash scored a fluent victory over N Neelkantan of Central Bank. Woman International Master Swati Ghate failed to cope up with Sriram’s onslaught Jha in a Spanish Open game and lost.
