Doctors in Bihar were back to work today after their six-day strike against the killing of one of their colleagues but said they were working in fear, with gun-toting security guards providing cover.

‘‘Doctors are working under the shadow of fear as ransom calls keep coming to them even after the police operation against assailants of surgeon N.K. Agarwal,’’ general secretary of IMA (Bihar) Shahjanand Singh said.

Twenty leading doctors, constantly under threat from extortionists, have been provided security. The IMA general secretary and president, Vijay Shankar Singh, are among them. He said apart from those doctors who were given armed special task force personnel as guards, nearly 80 per cent had hired private guards.

Former Union minister Dr C.P. Thakur, said the confidence with which extortionists are targetting doctors and other professionals showed the ‘‘state government has either surrendered to them or is providing them patronage’’. Many doctors have already packed up from the state due to the law and order crisis, he said.
