Doctor rents home close by, comes calling

After a stint as the Malviya Nagar MLA and Minister of Health and Social Welfare, this is Congress candidate Dr Yoganand Shastri’s first election as Mehrauli candidate. An outsider to the constituency, he has hurriedly rented a room just last week.

Operating out of his house in C-24 Geetanjali Enclave, Shastri feels he is across the road for his people.

Counting on his work as the minister of health, Shastri is hopeful. “Main toh sirf ek sadak door hoon. Moreover, most people here know me and I am getting to know the area too,” he explained. With the same agenda of bettering streets, electricity supply, sewers, sanitation, this former professor has received a mixed reaction from residents.

The extra bait for Muslims is the pending construction work of a boundary wall of a qabristan near Andheria More.

While the Muslim electorate has traditionally been pro-Congress, others are skeptical about of the same old promises.

“Politicians come before every election and promise the same things. After they win, very little is done,” said a cloth merchant near Auliya Masjid.
