Tension prevailed between two communities here after a doctor was beaten to death on Saturday by a group on night patrol.

The victim, Rajendra Singh Sangwan of Palheda in Meerut was said to be a former Tihar Jail doctor. He was visiting his sister in Begumabad area, when he stepped out to smoke around 2.30 am on Saturday.

When he was passing through Kidwai Nagar, a citizens’ nightwatch group accosted him. The group thrashed him over an altercation. The victim died on Sunday morning. Sources said the doctor was mentally disturbed.

The situation has taken a communal hue as the alleged assailants were from the minority community, says Raj Kumar, a resident. Initially, police failed to register a complaint adding to residents’ ire, Raj Kumar added.

In turn, they began assaulting some members of the minority community. It was only when officials and influential citizens pleaded did the situation come under control.
