VADODARA, Nov 11: As revellers continue to enjoy dazzling fireworks three days after Diwali, burn, skin and throat infection cases continue to trickle in at the hospitals in the city.

Sir Sayaji General hospital has registered around 25 major and minor burn cases since Monday. Around 18 patients have complained of various skin disorders due to exposure to explosive materials. Many patients complain of throat infection after inhaling the smoke from the fire-crackers.

Besides the SSG, such cases were reported at the private hospitals. The doctors at the SSG, however, said that the number was normal. “Every year during Diwali, large number of burn patients report at the hospital. This year the number has almost remained stagnant,” said a Resident Medical Officer (RMO) in the emergency wing of the hospital. He said that most of the burn injuries occurred when the crackers accidentally exploded in the hands.

The SSG management, realising that such cases would be reported in numbers during Diwali, has pressed into service more doctors in the emergency wing.

“We have arranged for dealing with such cases by deputing more doctors and para-medical staff at the emergency,” a senior doctor said.

He added that as the Diwali festivity is likely to spill over even after Diwali is over, the staff would continue to remain deputed in the wing for a few more days.
