A Split Opposition once again contributed largely to CPI(M) walking away with two seats — one Parliament and the other Assembly — with huge margins in the by-election held here last Sunday.

On Vidyasagar Assembly seat, Ajit Panja’s daughter Mohua Mondal lost to CPI(M)’s Anadi Sahu with a margin of over 22,000 votes. The seat was held by the CPI(M)’s Lakshmi De. The security deposit for the BJP’s candidate here was forfeited. The Trinamool had left the seat to the BJP.

In Nabadwip LS constituency, the Trinamool lost to the CPI(M) with a huge margin of 98,800 votes. The Congress candidate bagged 1,37,000 votes, tilting the victory margin of the CPI(M)’s candidate in the seat. This LS seat too was held by the Trinamool.

CPI(M) state secretary Anil Biswas held the results as ‘‘people reposing more faith in CPI(M).’’ Disagreed Congress leader Manas Buhian: ‘‘It’s a victory of sheer manipulation of administrative forces to snatch the seat.”

Blaming ‘‘rigging” for Mandal’s defeat, Ajit Panja hinted that he would begin a important dialogue with the Congress. ‘‘The result proved that the Trinamool-BJP have lost people’s confidence,’’ he said.
