SURAT, June 4: The Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI) has organised a panel discussion on `The Ill-effects of Pollution on the People’ at its premises on Friday, on the occasion of World Environment Day.

Former MP Haroobhai Mehta, who is the convenor of a three-member committee set up by the Gujarat High Court to monitor pollution in and around Surat, will preside over the discussion. The co-ordinator will be Vikasben Desai while the other speakers include Dr D J Golakia, Tony Nicholas, B H Mehta, S D Panesar, professor Robin Christian, I C Patel, Arun Jariwala and Dr Gulam Malek.

The discussion has been organised at the instance of the committee, which was on a day’s visit to Surat last week. The committee felt that though the industry was doing its bit to reduce pollution there was no data on the effects pollution might have had on people. The panel discussion will also attempt to generate data on that count as very little is known about public health and pollution, the committee felt. An attempt will be made to come up with suggestions to reduce pollution levels and how its impact on people’s health can be minimised.

Meanwhile, Shrishti-Preet, a non-governmental organisation, has appealed people to plant more and more trees and save water, paper and electricity judiciously as part of the World Environment Day celebrations on Friday. It has appealed people not to buy articles manufactured from animal skins, hides, horns, bones, nails, feathers, beaks and tusks.

It has also called on people not to thrown plastic waste like carry-bags, gutkha pouches in public places, rivers or lakes and oppose unreasonable tree felling.
