Seventeen people were injured when police resorted to lathicharge to control more than 2,000 Karbi women who gheraoed the deputy commissioner’s office here on Friday.

The women, activists of the Karbi Anglong Women’s Organisation, had gheraoed the deputy commissioner’s office last night, demanding punishment to police officials for taking action against “innocent” Karbis.

The Diphu police had arrested 14 Karbis following the killing of two persons of the Dimasa community on November 2.

The women also demanded the release of the arrested Karbis and an end to alleged harassment of the Karbi people and police atrocities.

They later gheraoed the house of Congress mp from the area, Biren Singh Ingti to press their demands.

At least 89 people have been killed in ethnic violence between the warring Karbi and rival Dimasa tribes in the hill district of Karbi Anglong since September 26.

About four days ago, fresh violence erupted in Karbi Anglong after two people were killed by a group of unidentified people who attacked a bus travelling from Diphu to Dhansiri, police said. A group of about 25 people, armed with spears and machets, waylaid a bus coming from Diphu towards Dhansiri at Charchari in the evening.
