BANGALORE, March 26: The issue of alleged irregularities in the Mysore Paper Mills (MPM) created an uproar in the Assembly yesterday with the Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party members demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into its affairs.
BJP members, including its deputy leader S Suresh Kumar, K S Eshwarappa, Prameela Nesargi and Araga Jnanendra, and Vatal Paksha member Vatal Nagaraj wanted the government to place MPM Chairman and Managing Director S L Gangadharappa and two other officials G S Venkatram and G M Fateullah under suspension before ordering a probe.
Eshwarappa said the MPM officials were involved in the misappropriation of crores of rupees in the purchase of international pulp and in the selling of printing paper.
The pulp marketed by Ekman Lie Big AB, Sweden, was being supplied to MPM by Shreerang Mercantile (India).
The company incurred losses of around Rs 2 crore losses last year owing to a two-month delay in supply by Shreerang. Eshwarappa wanted the government toblacklist Shreerang and recover the losses.
The BJP member drew the attention of the House to the proceedings of the MPM Board meeting on January 6, 1998.
According to it, the CMD ruled that there was no need to have a third party inspection of the pulp, a practice being followed to ascertain its quality.
