It is difficult being a teenager at the best of times. To add to their woes, very often they are afflicted with what is called in scientific terms acne vulgaris. Acne can lead to extreme anguish and is known to have caused even psychological trouble. The generally rebellious teenager is forced to pay heed to loads of misleading advice, most of which deals with foods to be taken or to be avoided. Almost every food item under the sun has been blamed for causing or aggravating pimples. The truth is that inspite of much effort, researchers are still not very clear about causes or remedies. Although there is little objective data to show link between diet and acne, the verdict is clear. Certain foods can directly or indirectly influence the factors responsible for acne. The mode of action is via proliferation of cells that are involved, increasing hormones related to sebum production, colonization of bacteria and the inflammatory process. Recent studies have shown that there is a definite association between milk consumption and acne occurrence/flare ups. Explained simply, the metabolic effect of consuming milk (two and more servings per day) can cause a biological response in teenage girls. Also, studies indicate that consuming skimmed milk, low fat milk or whole milk is just as good or bad. It is the hormones in milk that cause the acne exacerbation and evidently not the presence or absence of fat. Foods rich in iodine, like soya sauce and seafood, are also considered likely factors in acne flare up and are best avoided.Senior nutrition consultant, PSRI, New Delhi(To be continued)
