Even as the CPI(M) announced its candidates for all constituencies in West Bengal, it strategically left out one — Kolkata North-West — which has turned into a battleground for Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee and her out-of-favour lieutenant Sudip Bandopadhyay.

Bandopadhyay, who represents the constituency, fell from grace after he allegedly tried to become a Union minister, bypassing the claims of the Trinamool Congress chief. Sources say Banerjee now wants to field Mayor Subrata Mukherjee from Kolkata North-West and shunt Bandopadhyay to some rural constituency.

When Bandopadhyay met Banerjee in her Delhi office a few days ago, she offered him two seats — both Congress bastions — Berhampore (held by Adhir Choudhury) and Raigunj (the seat of P.R. Dasmunsi). Sources say, he refused and left in a huff.

But the former chief whip of Trinamool Congress Parliamentary Party is not willing to part with his seat without a fight. On Monday, he held a rally at Subodh Mullick Square in his constituency, and announced: ‘‘I shed my blood for this constituency and I will not go anywhere else. I will contest from here itself.’’ Interestingly, he was sharing the dais with Union MoS for HRD Dr Vallabhbhai Ramjibhai Kathiria of BJP.

When mediapersons sought Banerjee’s reaction on Tuesday, she refused to comment on Bandopadhyay’s statement. She, however, hinted at her resolve to field the Mayor from Kolkata North-West.
