The Indian Express’s Gautam Dheer has not been charged with any offence in the final report submitted by the Special Investigative Team probing the Nayagaon rape case and related issues.
The report, which was submitted to the Sessions Judge, Ropar today, said the SIT had not found any evidence to corroborate the accusation levelled by the victim and others that Dheer had threatened her over the telephone. The report said the journalist admitted he had called the victim but denied having threatened her.
The report said there was no independent witness or any material on record to corroborate what had transpired.
Referring to the allegation that Dheer had met and threatened the victim at the General Hospital, Panchkula two days after his release, the SIT report said investigations showed the accused had neither met the victim nor threatened her. The investigations were based on corroborative evidence from doctors and people who accompanied Dheer to the hospital.
The SIT has urged the court to hold day-to-day hearings in the case. A Division Bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court was today informed by the Additional Advocate-General that the SIT had finalised and submitted its report to the Sessions Judge, Ropar.
