Madhya Pradesh government today asked a high-level committee to probe the release of water from Indira Sagar Dam in Khandwa district, while the toll in April 7 drowning during a fair at Dharaji near Dewas mounted to 29 with the recovery of 20 bodies from the Narmada river today.
Several persons were missing but if their number has come down with the recovery of bodies, was not exactly known, police said. Earlier official sources had said that about 35 persons were missing.
CM Babulal Gaur has asked the high-level probe committee, headed by Water Resources Principal Secretary Arvind Joshi, to submit a report on the incident within 15 days, an official release said here. Action would be taken on the basis of the report of the committee, it added.
Ujjain Commissioner Jaideep Govind and Ujjain Range IG Anil Kumar have rushed to the spot while Gaur is scheduled to visit Dharaji tomorrow. Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly, Jamuna Devi and Congress Legislature Party spokesman Sajjan Singh Verma have reached the spot.
The tragedy occurred when some persons, taking a holy dip during the Bhutadi Amavasya Mela, were swept away due to sudden rise in the water level.
