MUMBAI, MARCH 16: After running from pillar to post for more than a month, the Congress-led Democratic Front today succeeded in garnering funds towards remuneration for the cotton and onion growers.

“We were short of Rs 875 crore. Following intervention of Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, the district central cooperative banks have agreed to provide the necessary amount,” a senior official said.

The official said the cotton as well as onion growers will be given either cheques or drafts on Saturday so that they can be encashed on the same day, the official said.

The official said that during the current season, the Cooperative Cotton Growers Federation had procured 170 quintals of cotton worth Rs 3500 crore. “Payment of Rs 2600 crore has already been made, while the remaining amount will be paid on Saturday,” the official added.
