Sri Lankan spin wizard Muttiah Muralitharan, who has often been in news for his unusual bowling action, has said he would continue playing the game despite efforts by some people to stop him.
“People have tried to stop me, so I want to continue. I am still really enjoying my cricket,” said Muralitharan, who has been called three times for throwing during his playing career.
Muralitharan, who holds the world record for most Test wickets along with Australian Shane Warne with 527 wickets, said he was not sure whether even a clean chit from the International Cricket Council would put an end to all the doubts surrounding his bowling action.
“I thought the same thing in 1999. Who knows, in another three years may be something else will come up. It has not happened once or twice, it has happened three times. So I expect someone to come again and question me,” he told the latest edition of The Wisden Asia.
“I think most people will be convinced that my action is fair and legal. I will be happy with 90 per cent. There will perhaps always be 10 per cent who are jealous. You can’t help them.”
Murali, who recently was the subject of a documentary in London in which he was filmed bowling with a brace on his arm, said the film “will prove a point to those who had said that it was physically impossible to bowl a ball that turned the other way.”
“I proved that it was possible to bowl the doosra without bending the arm. But it was only for public opinion. I was not trying to prove anything to the ICC. I have done all the tests for them and there is nothing more for me to prove there,” Murali added.
