Delhi’s BRT corridor gets berated in Parliament

Rajya Sabha members criticised the Bus Rapid Transport system which has caused havoc on Delhi roads.

The Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) system which has caused a traffic havoc in south Delhi came under a severe attack in Parliament with members in the Rajya Sabha demanding its scrapping.

Raising the issue during the Zero Hour, Rajya Sabha member Chandan Mitra (Nominated) said the BRT was “one of the most ill-conceived transport schemes” putting people to inconvenience.

He said eight people had died and scores had been injured on the BRT route. Buses are stopped in the middle of the road making it difficult for the passengers to board them.

Mitra was supported by several BJP and Left members in his demand that the entire BRT scheme be scrapped. He said the scheme, under which six more routes are to be covered, was conceived without consultations with the stakeholders like the Resident Welfare Associations.

It has been imposed on the city on the advice of “a few IIT professors who studied the similar system in Bogota or Cambodia”.

He wondered how pollution in the city could be reduced when vehicles would get stuck in traffic snarls for hours.

The ambitious scheme, under which buses and other vehicles would ply on dedicated lanes, has created complete traffic chaos after it was thrown open on a 5.8 km corridor in south Delhi.

While the BRT officially opened on Monday, trial runs were going on for the last few days. Authorities have said they did not anticipate the volume of traffic, which the BRT is not able to accommodate.
