In an International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF) meeting held in Beijing, it was decided that New Delhi will host the ISSF World Cup in March 2010. Competitions will be held in shotgun, air and rifle events.
The competition, to be held under the banner of the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI), assumes importance as it will be the first of the qualifying competitions for the year — with 15 quota places up for grabs — for the 2012 London Olympics. The meet will be held at the Dr Karni Singh Shooting Ranges, venue for the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
Although the NRAI has organised World Cups before, this would be the first time India will host all three events — rifle, pistol and shotgun — which the federation sees as a great opportunity for its shooters.
“The New Delhi World Cup is expected to give Indian shooters the opportunity to further showcase their talent on home turf before the London Games,” said NRAI official Rajeev Bhatia today.
Of the 15 quota places available, three will be reserved in each of the categories for the men’s section. In the women’s category, however, it will be two each in rifle, pistol and shotgun.
Prior to the World Cup, the NRAI will also host the Commonwealth Shooting Championships from February 18 to 28. Being a host country for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, it is mandatory for Delhi to hold the CSC as well.
