Facing criticism over traffic chaos on the Bus Rapid Transit Corridor in Delhi, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Tuesday said the second model of BRT Corridor would be ready in two or three months and government would adopt one that would suit Indian conditions.“We are trying a BRT corridor system that is more acceptable to people of India,” Dikshit, who is here along with a team of officials to study the BRT project of Beijing as part of her China tour, told reporters.Dikshit said the 16 kilometre corridor had been divided into two models “one Indian model and the other the imported model”. “Of the two, whichever is more suitable to Indian culture, driving systems and Indian habits, that is the one that would work best”.Delhi’s nascent BRT corridor had run into rough weather and come under fire over the traffic pile-ups ever since it was thrown open to test run in April.Experts had thought of trial of a system and “It (the first model) has worked. It has not worked,” she said. “We will have a look here (in Beijing). The officials already visited (the corridor) yesterday,” she said.“The second model will be ready in about two or three months. Then it will be easy for us to choose between the two.We have already planned out five other corridors. But we will do this corridor only after seeing which of the two models works,” Dikshit said.“Road widening has already taken place. You can’t cut a tree in Delhi. Everybody rises up. I am myself against cutting of trees. We have to work for conditions prevailing in India. You can loosely call it an Indian model,” she said, adding the first model which was prepared by experts from IIT and RITES had caused a “lot of furore."
