Punjabi pop singer Daler Mehndi, wanted by the Punjab Police in a human trafficking case, was arrested by the Delhi Police special cell today. He was picked up from the Vasant Vihar residence of his friend, Shamsher Singh. Police say they had had the information about Daler’s presence in the city for the past few days. ‘‘We had been tracking his movements for some time,’’ Special Cell Joint Commissioner Neeraj Kumar said.

‘‘We had managed to track him down and found that he was travelling in a Santro car. When it was confirmed that it was Daler indeed, he was picked up for questioning,’’ Special Cell DCP Ashok Chand said.

The arrest was, however, shown around 6 pm in the evening when the police had clarified the legal aspects of the case. ‘‘We had to check all aspects of the case as the matter is in court. We had received communication from the Punjab Police who have registered a case against him. Initially, he had been picked only for questioning,’’ a senior officer said. Daler disclosed to the police that he had been in the Capital for nearly a month and was shifting houses between Vasant Kunj, Vasant Vihar, Janakpuri, Vikaspuri and his Nangloi farmhouse.

He told the cops that he was planning to move out of the Vasant Vihar house. ‘‘Between October-December this year, Daler has been to Patna, Mumbai, Jalandhar and Haryana,’’ a police officer said. The Delhi Police have informed the Patiala SSP about the developments and a team would be arriving here to take Daler to Patiala on a transit remand. ‘‘We would be producing him at Tis Hazari courts tomorrow,’’ the officer said.
