MUMBAI, OCT 6: A defiant half-century by Sangram Bagul helped Khandu Rangnekar XI save certain defeat against Vijay Merchant XI today. Rangnekar Xi picked three points at the end of the second round of the Sportstar Trophy under-19 MCA selection tournament at the Brabourne Stadium.

Bagul’s unbeaten tenth wicket stand of 29 with Gaurang Joglekar, prevented Merchant XI despite dominating play on the first two days. Bagul, coming in at 109-4, made 65 (5×4) and saved Rangnekar XI who were 130 runs behind.

At Brabourne Stadium: Khandu Rangnekar XI 162 and 212-9 (Samrat Chitre 36, Sangram Bagul 65 not out; Omkar Khanvilkar 3-58, Aziz Shaikh 3-33) drew Vijay Merchant XI 292-9 declared (Rubesh Kumar 59, Ashish Dabholkar 39, Omkar Khanvilkar 34; Gaurang Joglekar 6-118). Rangnekar XI 3 points, Merchant XI 5.

At Elf Vengsarkar Cricket Academy: Dattu Phadkar XI 162 and 99 (Prakash Palande 4-30, Sameer Bandarkar 2-18) lost to Vijay Manjrekar XI 190 and 73-2 (KamranChaudhary 30) by eight wickets. Manjrekar XI 8, Phadkar XI 0.

Points after second round: Manjrekar XI 11, Merchant XI 10, Rangnekar XI 6, Phadkar XI 3.

Third round (October 12-14): Merchant XI vs Phadkar XI, Manjrekar Xi vs Rangnekar XI.

Title for Rizvi

Rizvi Springfield High School defeated St Anne’s, Orlem, by 182 runs to win the DSO (suburbs) under-16 final in the inter-school cricket tournament, for the Vinoo Mankad Trophy, at Sassanian Ground, Azad Maidan today.

All-rounder Santosh Agrahari, 14, was the star performer, contributing an unbeaten 72 with the bat and claiming 4 for 23 in a five-over spell.

Rizvi won the toss and elected to bat on a dry grassy wicket conducive to pace bowling. Captain Pankaj Ojha scored a chanceless 56 off 61 balls. All-rounder Santosh Agrahari came in at No 4 and scored 72 off 76 balls (4×4, 1×6). That helped Rizvi set Anne’s a tough target of 245 in 40 overs.

St Anne’s were bundled out for 62 in 30 overs, Ashish Gupta (3-3) sharing thespoils with Santosh.

In the DSO (city) first round yesterday, Shardashram Marathi defeated Aryan HS by 27 runs.
