The Kashmir Committee, a private group of interlocutors, today suggested that the Assembly elections in J&K be postponed, saying many separatists were ready to contest if the atmosphere was conducive.

Addressing a press conference, Ram Jethmalani, the committee’s head, said many separatist groups had agreed to ‘‘conditional participation’’ in the elections, and the condition was to create a conducive atmosphere. He said another condition which came from every quarter, except the ruling National Conference, was the postponement of elections. ‘‘Elections ought to be postponed for some time but unfortunately the decision is to be taken by the EC.” he said.

‘‘I hope the Election Commission will take note of this widespread demand. The demand is not unreasonable and participation in the elections should not be frustrated on this small point,’’ he said.

The group, which concluded its three-day visit to the state today, however, conceded ‘‘limited success’’ in its efforts. On the Hurriyat’s no to elections, the committee said those who stand in the way of democracy will be marginalised.

Jethmalani said the dialogue process cannot be dissociated from elections and the committee has conveyed to the separatists that talks on the future dispensation in J-K will be held only with the elected representatives. ‘‘Most separatist groups have realised the futility of separatism, many leaders have assured us participation in the elections,’’ he said.

The committee said J-K Democratic Freedom Party president Shabir Shah had reiterated he was not averse to taking part in the elections if it was meant to identify the genuine representatives of the people.

Asked if Shah will contest, Jethmalani asked the media to wait for two days. ‘‘Shah is visiting New Delhi. He is meeting the PM or Deputy PM. The Kashmir Committee will facilitate this meeting,” he said.

Jethmalani said Ghulam Rasool Shah, a former Hizbul Mujahideen commander and convenor of the People’s Conference, have assured him participation in the elections.
