Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink grabbed a late winner to give big-spending Chelsea a 2-1 victory at Liverpool in their opening game of the Premier league season today.The Dutch substitute drove a low shot into the Liverpool net after 87 minutes in front of the club’s new Russian billionaire owner Roman Abramovich, who was watching from the stands. Liverpool looked to have salvaged a draw when England striker Michael Owen scored controversially with a twice-taken penalty after 79 minutes.Argentine midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron, one of 70 million pounds-worth of new signings made in the close season by Chelsea, had given the London club a 25th-minute lead.Leeds United battled grittily but could not quite hang on for a morale-boosting win on the return of ex-players Lee Bowyer and Jonathan Woodgate to Elland Road.Newcastle took the lead after 20 minutes when Alan Shearer converted from the spot after Lucas Radebe fouled Kieron Dyer.Leeds rallied though and Mark Viduka levelled four minutes later with a low shot. Alan Smith then put Leeds in front after seizing on Olivier Bernard’s weak back pass after 57 minutes but Shearer earned a deserved share of the points when he pounced from close range two minutes from time.Charlton looked sorely in need of inspiration with their new Italian signing Paolo Di Canio not included due to lack of fitness.Nicolas Anelka fired City in front from the spot after 13 minutes when Robbie Fowler was tripped and fellow Frenchman Antoine Sibierski made it 2-0 10 minutes later.South African defender Mark Fish was sent off for fouling Fowler after 71 minutes and Chinese midfielder Sun Jihai rubbed salt into the wound with City’s third seven minutes from the end.
