JALANDHAR, Aug 20: Former president of the All India Youth Congress Maninderjit Bitta today said stringent laws should be made to deal with terrorism and there should be a provision for capital punishment for terrorism related crimes.
He also called for declaration of Pakistan as a terrorist state for fomenting militancy in the Indian territory.
While talking to reporters here, Bitta demanded a ban on the People’s Commission which is independetly probing cases of violation of human rights by security agencies during militancy era in Punjab. He described the Commission as “illegal and unconstituional”.
He said the Commissoin was trying to usurp the powers of the courts which could not be tolerated.
Alleging that the commission was being supported by certain supporters of the Khalistani movement, Bitta said the terms of reference on which the Commission was functioning would only aid in vitiating the peacful atmosphere in the state. He said the Commision’s selective probe would endanger the country’s unity and integnity.
Bitta alleged that the government should order a CBI probe into reports that the certain pro-militant organisaitons in Canada, America and England were funding the supporters of the militancy in Punjab to foment trouble.
Describing terrorism as the biggest issue before the national today, Bitta regretted that the political parties were not addressing the issue with the seriousness it deserved.
Ban on people’s commission: The Bhartiya Janata Yuva Morcha has demanded of the Punjab government to immediately ban the People’s Commission probing human rights violations in Punjab.
Morcha president Tarun Chugh said here that the commission was illegally holding court beyond the purview of the constitution.Chugh said it was strange that the Commisison and the human rights organisaitons were silent about the killings by militants of innocents in Kashmir. He also alleged that Akali Dal (Amritsar) president S.S.Mann was trying to viitiate the atmosphere in Punjab under a deep-rooted conspiracy.
