CHANDIGARH, April 23: Government Classical and Vernacular Teachers’ Union Punjab, which represents 16,000 teachers working in government and other recognised schools of Punjab have welcomed Punjab Government’s decision regarding introduction of English as an additional subject for primary classes.

The president of the association, Harbhajan Singh Dhindsa has in a release congratulated the State Chief Minister, Parkash Singh Badal and the Education Minister, Tota Singh for taking a decision which goes in favour of poor people whose children will now be able to learn English at par with the children of other well placed families. He has further stated that his union would also ask the Education Minister to declare drawing, physical education and agriculture as optional subjects in the middle and matriculation examinations.

According to a press release issued here today, president of the Brahman Sabha R P Sharma while welcoming the decision demanded the teaching of Sanskrit from Class I.
