The Supreme Court today converted the life sentence awarded to four members of forest brigand Veerappan’s gang to the death penalty, for killing 21 people and injuring 14, in a landmine blast in Karnataka in April 1993.
A division bench comprising Justice Y.K. Sabhaarwal and Justice B.N. Agrawal converted the life sentence of convicts Simon, Gnana Prakash, Madhiah and Bilavendra to capital punishment.
The bench dismissed their appeals against the order of conviction passed by a special TADA court in Karnataka.
The bench allowed the plea for enhancement of punishment made by Karnataka. Counsel Sudhir Walia said it was a fit case for enhancement as the convicts were of Veerappan’s gang and their crime warranted death penalty.
The gang blew up a bus carrying policemen and informers on April 9, 1993, killing 21 — mostly policemen — and injuring 14, including a superintendent of police.
