Janata Dal, (United) President Sharad Yadav on Thursday said the India-US nuclear agreement would deprive the country of its non-aligned profile. “We will lose our traditional identity of a non-aligned nation and be forced to go along with the US on several critical foreign policy matters,” he said. The Iran vote, according to him, was a case in point.

Asked if JD(U) would join hands with the Left in view of its opposition to the deal, Yadav said, “We have to see to what extent the Left is prepared to go…In any case, we will first talk in the NDA and then decide.” On whether the agreement must get parliamentary approval, the JD(U) chief said there has been no such tradition and all international treaties have been clinched at the government level. However, he felt, the country’s interests are best protected if a parliamentary nod is obtained.
