CHANDIGARH, Aug 17: The Punjab government would involve the deputy commissioners in the paddy procurement who would coordinate with various agencies so that the farmers are nor harassed in the mandis.
Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, who chaired a meeting of the deputy commissioners to discuss various issues and accelerate the tempo of development, directed the deputy commissioners to ensure that the process of paddy procurement is carried out smoothly.
The major worry of the state government is the early arrival of about two million tonnes of paddy in September. The procurement agencies are gearing up to handle the market arrival of about 12 million tonnes of paddy.
The Centre has agreed to move out about eight lakh metric tonnes of paddy stored in Punjab to create storage space by the end of this month.
Food and Supplies Minister Madan Mohan Mittal said all arrangements had been completed in the mandis for procuring paddy.
Badal directed the deputy commissioners to effectively monitor the functioning of all public wings, especially of revenue registration, issuing of licences and arms licences to put an end to corrupt practices. He said their role was of paramount importance in giving speedy justice to the people besides boosting the development process.
He also instructed them to regularly visit the development projects in their respective areas.
Expressing serious concern over rising prices, the Chief Minister said though it was the responsibility of the Centre to check the rising prices, the deputy commission should ensure the availability of food grains at the fair price shops. He directed them to hold meetings with the food grain dealers to persuade them to sell the commodities at reasonable rates.
The Chief Minister also reviewed the focal point scheme.
