A day after ‘‘yeh chor hai’’ was branded on the back of a jail inmate in Amritsar, a similar case was reported here, where the name of his caste, ‘choorraa’’, was branded on an undertrial.

While Malkiat Singh alias Teettu has accused the Deputy Jail Superintendent and the jail doctor of Central Jail of branding the word on his back, jail officials claim the prisoner has hurt himself to blackmail the authorities into giving him drugs.

Teettu showed his wound to the court and held Deputy Superintendent Satpal Singh and doctor Chander Shekhar responsible when he was presented before Judge S.K. Garg in a case of attempt to murder today.

His counsel submitted an application, asking for a probe into the case. The court, besides issuing a notice to the state for July 12, ordered that Teettu be examined at the civil hospital, before he is sent back to the jail.

Teettu told mediapersons that his ordeal began when he demanded medicine for a ‘‘disc problem’’ last night. ‘‘I was taken out of my chakki by the jail superintendent and the doctor. They said I belong to a low caste and so I would not be given any medicine. They also thrashed and tortured me for about half-an-hour and branded this word on my back,’’ he said.

When contacted the Deputy Jail Superintendent said: ‘‘He is a notorious criminal and used to take drugs. He was being given medicines, as prescribed by a psychiatrist, but he always demanded more medicines.’’

‘‘He wanted to put pressure on us through such tactics, so that we fulfill his undue demands. I was not even in the jail last night.’’ he added.
