The Special Investigation Team probing the Godhra carnage today arrested a crucial link, Razzaq Kurkur, after a pre-dawn operation in Singal Falia. This brought the total number of arrests in connection with the carnage up to 68.
‘‘We had been tracking him for the past four days. We knew he would get in touch with his family and check up on the procedure initiated for attaching his property. We did not rush and waited for the right moment,’’ said DIG, Crime, Rakesh Asthana.
Asthana said the arrest was a major breakthrough. ‘‘During the recent months, we have established his role in the incident as corroborated by evidence and statements given by other accused,’’ he said.
Officials had alleged that the consignment of petrol that was used in setting coach S6 afire was dumped in the backyard of Kurkur’s Aman Guest House. He was alleged to have got petrol cans loaded into an autorickshaw along with nine other suspects who rushed to D cabin where the coach was set afire. They said Kurkur’s interrogation would help establish the source of petrol.
