After two years, the Gujarat government will once again run trains to supply water to the people of Saurashtra. And the Railway Ministry is providing this service free of cost. As many as 74 villages in Okha-Mandal and Kalyanpur taluka of Jamnagar district will receive Narmada water by train. Chief Minister Narendra Modi flagged off one train to the coastal belt of Jamnagar from Hapa station today.
To fulfill the eight-MLD water requirement of these villages, 10.07 MLD Narmada water will be supplied daily by two trains. The water will be procured from Khijadia sump which receives Narmada water through Maliya canal that supplies water to Rajkot and Jamnagar cities. According to Gujarat Water Supply and Sewerage Board (GWSSB) sources, these villages used to get water from Shani dam which has now hit rock bottom. In many villages lying on the coastal belt, even the groundwater is saline.
The Khijadia sump, with a capacity of one crore litre, is located about four km from Hapa station. Water from the Khijadia sump will be transported to Hapa station through a pipeline laid specially for the project. From Hapa, the trains will head for Bhatia, the biggest village under the scheme. The water will reach Bhatia terminal after covering a distance of 107 km in two hours.
The GWSSB has specially constructed a sump at Bhatia station with a capacity of 20 lakh gallons to store water. From Bhatia sump, the water will be supplied through the existing pipeline network from Shani dam. GWSSB officials said water would be supplied till other alternative sources of water were available. The GWSSB has already spent Rs 4 crore on the infrastructure. The Railways will provide two trains with 70 tankers of 25,000-litre capacity each. According to GWSSB officials, 30 litres of water per head will be supplied to each village daily. Project GWSSB Joint Director Kishor Anjaria said, ‘‘This is a contingency project to supply water to remote areas of Jamnagar district where there is no other alternative source.’’
