MUMBAI, June 1: Aamir Dalvi emerged fastest rider for the second succesive year at the Mitsubishi Autocross for two wheelers sponsored by Tidewater Oil Company and organised by Sportscraft.

Dalvi proved his prowess at the Wilson College Gymkhana grounds, Marine Drive, today. The third year Rizvi College student, overcame strong challenges from a host of seasoned riders, clocking three minutes, 6.40 seconds in the Indian motorcycles above 80cc upto 110cc Group D category. The timing turned out to be the fastest of the meet that involved 105 riders.Dalvi, though, enjoyed a slice of luck. Zubin Patel’s lapse while riding a Shogan during which he recorded a `touch’ while going through his exercise undermined his timing of 3:04.00 — which would have been the fastest. A penalty that cost Patel 30 seconds, revised his timing to 3:34.00 and put him out of the running.

Following Dalvi on the serpentine course were Ilyas Bham and Rustom Patel at second and third places respectively.

Zubin, however, did not return home empty handed, winning two other classes. Victory in the Indian scooters 80cc to 110cc (Group D) class and the Indian motorcycles, above 80cc upto 110cc (Group B) modified class came as consolation.

With the heavens opening out today and gusty winds adding to the toughness of the course, the riders were hard-pressed to cope. The slushy surface made competitors draw on all their experience as they cautiously went through the motions. Several riders were thrown off their seats but fortunately no serious injuries were sustained.

It began to rain after the first three classes were gone through but the class for modified bikes, usually which record the best timings, were hit by the ravages of inclement weather this time around.
