Dalmiya should be out, says Buddha but Basu disagrees

West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and former Chief Minister Jyoti Basu have locked horns, well almost, over the ensuing election to the Cricket Association of Bengal.

While Bhattacharjee today formally asked Jagmohan Dalmiya not to contest the CAB elections, Basu said Kolkata Police Commissioner Prasun Mukherjee— pitted against Dalmiya by Buddhadeb for the post of CAB president—has no business contesting the elections scheduled for July-end.

Bhattacharjee is allegedly sore over Dalmiya’s role in the removal of Saurav Ganguly as Indian captain. “I had a talk with Sports Minister Subhas Chakrabarty and I have told him to meet Dalmiya and request him not to contest CAB elections. I want Dalmiya to go. Saurav should take more responsibilites,’’ the Chief Minister said.

There is speculation that the ruling Marxists want Ganguly to take an active role in CAB administration after the 2007 World Cup.

Basu, mentor of sports minister Subhas Chakrabarty, however, openly batted for Dalmiya saying he wondered why the Kolkata Police Commissioner should be in the fray and whether he would be able to do justice to his duty as the CP while looking after his duties as CAB president.

“People are asking me about the CAB elections and I am telling everybody that I have no interest in it. However my conern is, will the CP be able to discharge his duties and responsibilites as head of Kolkata police while looking after the affairs of CAB,’’ Basu told The Indian Express.

Chakrabarty, meanwhile, said he would obey the CM’s order. ‘‘I will follow the CM’s order. In fact had I been in his (Dalmiya’s) place. I would have quit,’ Chakrabarty said.

However, Dalmiya put on a brave front. ‘‘CAB elections are six weeks away from now. A lot of things can happen. I will consult my colleagues.”
