Ahmedabad, December 5: R N Dave, the metropolitan magistrate who issued the transfer warrant to take out underworld don Abdul Latif from Sabarmati Central Jail, and the special investigation team (SIT) which killed Latif in an encounter have been provided police protection. Sources said that the SIT and Dave had performed a very difficult task, putting their lives at risk as Latif members, still active in the state, could retaliate.

Weavers to launch chain fast

NAGPUR: Weavers of Nagpur district and their families will start a chain fast agitation from December 11 at Dhapdewada to press for their demands. These include strict implementation of Supreme Court directives reserving the manufacture of certain cloth items for the handloom industry and mandatory purchase of office furnishing cloth from the handloom corporation.

Varsity students defend Kanitkar

PUNE: Nearly 35 research students of the Department of Physics, University of Pune, protested against allegations made against Prof P L Kanitkar and other faculty members by Patit Pawan Sanghatana and Dr Ambedkar Teachers’ Organisation of Pune University. The two organisations have alleged that Kanitkar harassed Dr S I Patil, a reader in the department, and charged the administration with flouting reservation rules.
