PUNE, November 20: The Pune Municipal Corporation has set up a force to nab habitual octroi evaders and acquired pagers to improve communication between the staff. Additional Municipal Commissioner Deepak Kapoor said the force had helped recover octroi and fines up to Rs one lakh. An advertisement would be published shortly, he added, inviting the services of private security agencies to conduct thorough checks at the nakas. Octroi collection figures this year are higher than those of the corresponding period last year, Kapoor said.
Marathi Literary meet in Parli
AURANGABAD: The 71st annual Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Sahitya Sammelan will be held between February 6 and 9 at Parli in Beed district. The annual literary meet which has assumed the form of a festival is unparalleled in any other language. Special seminars will be held on `50 years of independence’ and on popular humourist, dramatist and reformer P K Atre, whose birth centenary is being celebrated next year.
Philosopher Pai felicitated
PUNE: Philosopher Wamanrao Pai was felicitated by Mayor Vandana Chavan at the Late Baburao Sanas Sports ground here on Tuesday, for his contribution to society in keeping alive the rich tradition of saints in Maharashtra. The mayor presented Pai with a citation. Pai’s wife, Shardamai, was also felicitated on the occasion.
Car, stereo thefts on the rise
PUNE: A spate of car and stereo thefts have been reported from Deccan Gymkhana in the last four days. Vishal Verma’s car stereo was stolen from his car on Saturday. Milind Hardikar, Rajkumari Jain and Sankpal also reported theft of their car stereos. A Maruti van belonging to Suhas Utarki was stolen from the same area. A massive man-hunt is on to track down the culprits.
