November 2: JABALPUR: Madhya Pradesh High Court has issued notices to the State government and nine police officials, including the director general of police (DGP), on a petition seeking a court directive to the government for a CBI inquiry into the death of a 20-year-old youth in police custody at Morena in August last year.The petitioner, Pran Singh Sikarwar, a fertilizer trader and father of the youth, had prayed to the court to direct the Madhya Pradesh government to award a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to him for the death of his son, Devendra Singh Sikarwar, who he alleged died after he was beaten up by the police.

Fellowship for women scribes

PUNE: The Sakal Newspapers Trust, Pune, has announced three months fellowship for women journalists working with Hindi and Marathi newspapers. .Applications are being invited for the fellowship, which is to be given for articles based on problems of women. Under the fellowship, the selected scribes will be given a monthly honorarium of Rs 1500, book allowance of Rs 500 and additional tour expenses for collection of research material.The last date for applying for the fellowship is November 10. Those interested may apply in full details to president/general secretary, Nagpur Union of Working Journalists, Tilak Patrakar Bhavan, near Panchsheel Theatre, Dhantoli, Nagpur.

Maharashtra Bhushan for Lata

NAGPUR: Melody queen Lata Mangeshkar will be honoured with `Maharashtra Bhushan’, the highest award of the state government this year, at a function to be held on the grounds of Vidhan Bhavan in city.A meeting was organised to finalise the details of the function here recently. The meeting was presided over by Nitin Gadkari, District Guardian Minister, while Anil Deshmukh, Minister of State for Education and Cultural Affairs, Vinod Gudadhe Patil, Minister of State for Forests and Labour and Devendra Phadnavis, Mayor.

President to visit Goa

PANAJI: President K R Narayanan will participate in the Liberation Day fete of the state of Goa on December 19, according to official sources here. Goa was liberated by the Indian defence forces in Operation Vijaya on December 19, 1961 from Portuguese rule. Narayanan had visited Goa in the past in his capacity as the Vice President.
