PUNE, Jan 19: Cyril Bernard’s solitary goal helped Ammunition Factory, Kirkee (AFK) to defeat Sappers Line Bazaar (LBS) in an encounter married by manhandling of referee by a losers team player.

Meanwhile, in another match of the day, Super XI edged out Chikalwadi Young Boys 2-0 in the VIth Dr Erin Nagarvala memorial hockey tournament at PCMC Poligras Stadium today.

AFK made their entry on the field with hardly eight players and without their regular goalkeeper. But they managed to play as according to the FIH Rules the team can allow any player to stay at the goalpost if he has the headgear.

AFK began with their familiar attacking style and raided the LBS defence regularly with good understanding among the forwards Umesh Thayagrajan, Cyril Bernard, Satyamurthi and Amin Sayyed.

The LBS players were too inexperienced to defend the AFK forwards who were making most of the moves but inside the circle they played overconfidently. In one such incident, Nelson Anthony of AFK in an attacking bid, had his stick unintentionally collide with LBS defender Jabbar Shaikh’s stick. Jabbar not taking it sportingly, went to argue with Nelson and in the end both of them received a word of warning from co-referee Sridharan Tamba.

Coming into the second-half with a goal yet to be scored, both sides players went in for fast game. In between the attack and counter attack, once again Jabbar was caught on the wrong foot by referee Vimal Benedict, when the defender, in an attempt to break the AFK forwards move, swing his stick in air to scare Cyril Bernard. Though, Cyril escaped without any injury, referee Benedict send Jabbar out of the playing field for dangerous play, for five minutes.

LBS paid heavily for Jabbar’s dids. While the defender was cooling his heels outside, Cyril penetrated into the LBS defence, neatly intercepting the ball provided by Umesh Thayagrajan and defeated keeper Pravin Dhere for the lone goal of the match.

The Jabbar episode had not finished yet. After the match, Jabbar manhandled and abused the referee Benedict, before the Maharashtra Hockey Association officials took Jabbar away. A formal written complain has been lodged by both the referees to MHA. When contacted, MHA’s secretary Benny Boodle informed that “Jabbar has been suspended for two tournaments and if any of the team member repeats the same, they will banned for two years”.

Other results: Super XI: 2 (Robert Rozario and Feroze Shaikh) bt CYB: 0.
