Mumbai, April 24: Two people, including a schoolgirl, were killed and seven others injured, few of them seriously, in a suspected gas cylinder explosion at Borivali on Saturday afternoon.

The deceased were identified as Chandini Radheshyam Sharma (11) and Bhimrao Kiran Kottak Daud (45), residing at the Ravi Kiran building of new MHB colony at Borivali.

The explosion also led to a minor fire. The fire brigade control room said that two fire engines, one tanker and two ambulances were rushed to the spot and the fire was controlled immediately. The injured have been admitted to Bhagwati Hospital, where few of them are said to be in a serious condition.Eye-witnesses claimed that the explosion, which sounded like a bomb, was so severe that it shook the foundation of the building. Though the explosion occurred on the ground floor, the slab of the first floor of the MHADA building came down. Window panes of neighbouring buildings were also shattered and people came running out of their houses inpanic. Twenty flats of the five-storeyed building were evacuated with the help of police, firemen and local residents.

Residents and eye-witnesses alleged that “some bomb might have been planted that resulted in the explosion,” which was however denied by the police. The dog squad was rushed to the site of the explosion for further investigation. The injured were identified as Hema Thakur, Preeti Sharma (14), Pushpa Sharma (35), Radheshyam Sharma (45), Poonam Sharma (15), Anil Sharma (10) and Gayatri Kailash Patirao (39).
