Curfew was relaxed for two hours today in Leh and Kargil towns in Jammu and Kashmir following an improvement in the situation after last week’s clashes over alleged desecration of the holy Koran by some Buddhists.
‘‘Curfew has been relaxed from 9.30 am to 11.30 am in Kargil town while in Leh,
the relaxation was from 10.30 am to 12.30 pm,’’ divisional commissioner, Kashmir, Basharat Ahmad
Dhar said.
He said curfew was being relaxed segment by segment and the relaxation hours may be further extended if everything remains in control in the twin towns of Ladakh region.
Dhar said the district administrations of Kargil and Leh would hold an all-party inter-religious meeting at 11.30 am to chalk out a joint public peace proposal which would be taken to the grassroot level to restore normalcy in the region.
Curfew was also relaxed yesterday in Leh for two hours with no untoward incident being reported.
Communal clashes were triggered in Kargil town last Monday when Muslims found some pages of the Quran in a mosque torn up and missing in Khangral Badkharboo village. The tension later spread to Leh town, forcing authorities to clamp curfew on both towns.
The Army had held a flag march in Buddhist-dominated Leh on Thursday after after the clashes.
