Replacing the BSF, the CRPF is set to take over counter-insurgency duties here. The shift of responsibilities would be in a phased manner over two years.
‘‘The process to replace BSF from J-K will start from this November and will be completed in two phases. We are set to replace the BSF in the first phase and recruitment of new battalions has been completed. If all goes as per the plan, the replacement process will be completed by 2005,’’ said CRPF’s Kashmir IG G.M. Srivastava.
The BSF has primarily been manning borders and the Line of Control, but it was inducted into counter-insurgency to fight militants here. ‘‘We will not only take over anti-militancy operations in J-K but across the country,’’ Srivastava said.
He said his force is equipped with all kinds of latest weapons to tackle militants operating in the Valley.
