PUNE, August 6: Children clambered atop the tank peering inside with interest wondering how a heavy object like it could move at a top speed of 80 kms.

This was probably the first time that children from the local schools were exposed to this kind of equipment.

Whether it was the famous Prithvi missile launcher – surface-to-air missile with a range between 60 kms to 180 kms, Sarvatra multispan bridging system, minefield marking equipment, bridge layer Tank T-72, they were on display for curious onlookers to see and touch at Utsav ’98 – the three day festival organised at the R & DE (Engrs), Dighi.

Utsav ’98 was inaugurated today by Lt. Gen. A. N. Sinha, Engineer-in-Chief (E-in-C), Southern Command. The E-in-C appreciated the efforts of DRDO towards making the nation self-reliant. Amongst the dignitaries who attended the inaugural session were Lt. Gen. A. S. Khanna, Lt. Gen. A. K. Puri, Commandant, CME and senior officers of other DRDO laboratories.

Informative documentary films on Antarctica were also shown as part of the festival. Utsav’ 98 is open to the public till August 9.
